Why is building relationships important for SROs?

Building relationships is essential for School Resource Officers (SROs) primarily because it fosters open communication and trust between the officers, students, and the school community. When SROs establish strong, positive relationships with students, they create an environment where students feel comfortable approaching them with concerns, whether they relate to safety, bullying, or personal issues.

This trust encourages students to communicate openly, which can lead to early intervention in problematic situations and a proactive approach to resolving conflicts. Furthermore, when students see SROs as approachable figures rather than authority figures to be feared, it promotes a culture of safety and support within the school, which can contribute to a more conducive learning environment.

In contrast, while ensuring compliance with school rules, preparing students for exams, and producing higher attendance rates may be relevant aspects of a school environment, they are often secondary outcomes that can stem from a foundation of mutual respect and understanding that is achieved through relationship building.
